So, you want unicorn hair?

Since these vibrant fashion colors are all the rage nowadays, I thought I'd let you all in on what it takes to have these types of colors. Here are the 6 things you need to be aware of before you make the decision!

For all vivid fashion colors to show up true to tone, it requires the hair underneath to be blonde. Yes, I said blonde! This ranges from red, which requires the darkest blonde, all the way to lavender, which requires the lightest pale blonde. Unless you are naturally blonde this process usually take multiple sessions, which leads me to the 2nd point.

Unless the stars are aligned and you are a nice natural blonde that hasn’t colored their hair in years, this process will most likely take multiple sessions. The process of removing pigment happens in stages and can be very damaging if done improperly or too quickly. If you have naturally dark hair or have colored your hair dark in the last few years, I can say it will definitely take multiple visits to the salon to achieve the color you want. As a stylist, my utmost concern is the health of my client’s hair. If the lightening is done wrong, it could severely compromise the hair and it will lose its ability to hold color. Just the thing you DON’T want it to do! Also, if you wait too long in between visits this can cost you extra to correct it.

These colors take TIME and multiple processes. So be prepared with plenty of snacks! Your hair will need to be lightened maybe once or twice, you’ll need a deep treatment to even out the porosity so the color will hold better, your hair will need to be dried in between steps and don’t forget processing times! I would expect to be in the salon anywhere from 3 to 8 hours, depending on where you started and where you want to end up.

Time is money and like I said, these colors definitely take some time. After all the steps and product used to get you where you want to be, it can be costly. The more drastic the change, the more steps it take to get there… the more money it’ll cost you. Share your budget with your stylist and if your desired color isn’t unattainable at the moment, discuss a color that will get you closer to your desired color so you don’t break the bank. Since it will most likely take multiple visits, explore other color options on the way to your destination! Always remember that you get what you pay for. If someone is advertising a deal that seems too good to be true, it most likely is. Unless the stylist is growing their clientele and trying to get their name out there, they aren’t going to give away their hard work for pennies and dimes.

Vivid colors are direct dyes, which means they stain the hair and lay on top of the cuticle. Permanent, oxidative color penetrates the cuticle and a chemical reactions occurs to change the color within the hair shaft. This chemical reaction does not occur in direct dyes, so these dyes fade out with every wash. All this mean is more visits to your favorite stylist! With proper home hair care these colors can last 4-8 weeks, at best. Pastels are much lighter, have less pigment in them, and last 1-2 weeks. They are ALL temporary.

The more consistent you are, the better your results will be. Don’t wait too long in between visits or it might end up costing more in the long run to fix it. If you love the color you have, stick with it, and be sure to make consistent appointments to keep it fresh. The more you layer the same color, the longer it will last. Avoid washing your hair every day. This strips the color and dries out your hair. Washing should be no more than 2-4 times a week with the proper professional color shampoo. There's no sense in spending all that money on the perfect color then, using cheap hair care that strips it away faster. This will make all the difference in the longevity if the color. Cheap shampoo ingredients strip your color! And cheap conditioner coats the hair in wax, suffocating it from needed moisture.

Well I hope this helped answer any questions you might have had concerning fashion colors. You should now be ready to take the plunge into rainbow hair land! These are my FAVORITE types of colors to do and I will be here for all your colorful hair needs. <3
